For my next class, I am planning on conducting research on a topic that in the last year, with the introduction of higher technology into my classroom, has become of great interest to me. I recently have started integrating the use of my new interactive white board more regularly in my lessons. I personally have seen a change in my own first grade students and I am eager to see if using this new technology truly increases student engagement for other elementary school students as well.
Here is my problem statement:
I plan to determine if the use of interactive white boards increases engagement for elementary school students.
Who: elementary school students
What: usage of interactive white boards
Why: impact...to increase engagement
I am still in the process of trying to find research appropriate to this topic. I may have to be more specific in my grade level, instead of the broader range of "elementary school students". Also, I planned on an "overall" look of subjects instead of just one subject, however I welcome any suggestions since this is new for me!

It seems like a good topic to me and certainly one that you can also work on in class. I just have a question with the "increase engagement" aspect. How would you measure that activity? Does that mean more time at the board, or does it mean number of different activities used per lesson? Just a thought. I think you have a good start in this process.
ReplyDeleteI really like this topic. I wonder if it will be possible to narrow it down to just first grade. Levels of engagement would probably vary with grade levels, partly because of class size, etc. I can't wait to see what you find out!
ReplyDeleteYou make a very interesting point regarding your need to identify the exact grade or age range that you will be investigating. In high school we almost always refer to grade level when examining student work or behavior because we have such dramatic changes in development in the time that they are here. I'm wondering if you could explore the increased engagement of white board use with pre-readers or converseley post-readers. That would put you at either end of the elementary spectrum without tying yourself to a specific grade or age.
